Isola del Liri

Isola del Liri

Isola del Liri, once renowned as an industrial town, is now famous as a city of music, paper mills and waterfalls

Located in the heart of the Media Valle del Liri, it finds its essence in water, the true symbol of the place.
The Liri River, which comes from Abruzzo, flows through the town and near the Boncompagni-Viscogliosi Castle, it cascades in a spectacular 30-meter waterfall, dividing the town into two sections and creating a unique setting. The Cascata Grande, with its majestic drop in the heart of the historic centre is unique in Europe, an exciting testimony of the force of nature.

For centuries, the energy generated by this waterfall powered the numerous factories that made Isola del Liri the first factory town in Ciociaria. Today, the town celebrates this industrial past through the Industrial Paper Archaeology Museum and Trail, which tells the story of the evolution of papermaking and the town's central role in the region's economic history.

Isola del Liri is also home to illustrious figures, including the anthropologist Giustiniano Nicolucci, the astronomer Federico Zuccari, the writer and journalist Costanzo Costantini and the architect Franco Purini, whose contributions have significantly shaped its cultural and scientific landscape.
