The area is characterized by flooded meadows, reed thickets and patches of hygrophilous woods. It is of great geological importance due to the presence of the Tremoletto sinkhole, a unique karstic phenomenon that caused the ground to collapse.
The slopes of Montemontano were inhabited during the Protohistoric period of the Bronze Age by a village that took advantage of the area's natural resources. Traces of this settlement remain visible today, including the foundations of ancient huts.
A short distance away, on the northwestern slopes of Minghitto Hill, lies a karstic cave known as "Grotta Milano," which was inhabited as early as the Middle Paleolithic period.
