The polygonal walls and the pointed arch

The town of Arpino lies on the left side of the middle valley of the Liri River, on a hill area at an altitude of about 450 metres above sea level

Acropoli di Civitavecchia

The center is dominated by the Acropolis, known as Civitavecchia (650 meteres), which is one of the most important sites for insight into the megalithic architecture in southern Latium, both in terms of the extent and antiquity of its walls. In fact, the civitas vetus of the city features one of the best-preserved polygonal masonry walls from pre-Roman times. Particularly noteworthy is the presence of the pointed arch, the only surviving example of its kind in the Mediterranean area. The Acropolis is referred to as Civitas Ciceroniana in the 1581 cadastral register, as it was believed that a residence belonging to Cicero’s family, inherited by his brother, was located here.
