Climbing at the Sora Crag: Discovering the Rava Rossa

The crag of Sora, locally known as "Rava Rossa," is one of the most captivating destinations for climbing enthusiasts in the Lazio region.

Falesia Rava Rossa

Located at an altitude of 400 meters, it lies within the forested eastern slope of Mount San Casto, just a short distance from the town of Sora. The name “Rava Rossa” (Red Ravine) comes from the characteristic reddish streaks running through the grey limestone walls, creating a striking visual contrast.

The crag is divided into three main sectors, each with its own unique features and routes of varying difficulty:

I Pilastri (The Pillars):
This is the first sector encountered along the access path and also the most popular. It offers around 40 routes, ranging in difficulty from 5a to 7b+, with a good variety in the 6a and 6b grades. The walls reach heights of up to 60 meters, allowing for some multipitch climbs. The climbing here includes overhangs, slabs, and technical dihedrals, providing challenges for all skill levels. During the nesting season (from January to the end of May), it's recommended to avoid the second pitches to prevent disturbing local wildlife.

Le Lisce Placche (The Smooth Slabs):
Located about 50 meters to the right of I Pilastri, this sector features compact limestone slabs that require precision and good balance. There are around twenty routes, some with second pitches that make the climbs even more engaging. In spring and early summer, vegetation can make certain sections slightly more demanding.

Il Pachiderma (The Pachyderm):
A small and quiet sector reachable in just a few minutes from Le Lisce Placche via a well-marked path. It offers six bolted routes, ranging from 10 to 20 meters in length. It's perfect for those looking for a relaxed climbing session in a more secluded setting.

La Ravetta:
Located about 10–15 minutes on foot from I Pilastri, this is a lesser-known sector with only four equipped routes. Access is a bit more challenging compared to the other sectors, but it offers an appealing alternative for climbers eager to explore new lines.

Climatic Conditions and Best Times to Climb

Thanks to its eastern exposure, the Sora crag offers ideal climbing conditions throughout much of the year:

  • Summer: After 1:30 PM, the walls are in the shade, making it perfect for climbing on hot days.
  • Winter: Temperatures can be quite cold, so it's best to climb in the morning when the sun warms the wall.
  • Spring and Autumn: These are the best seasons, with mild temperatures and optimal conditions between 10 AM and 5 PM.

Over the years, thanks to the efforts of some members of the Sora chapter of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), many routes have been re-bolted with new protection, chains, and carabiners, enhancing climber safety. Today, the crag boasts around 70 routes of varying difficulty and length, offering plenty of options for both beginners and more experienced climbers.

Climbing at the Sora crag is not just a sporting activity—it's also an opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and experience an authentic connection with the rock. Discovering hidden holds, finding the right balance, and pushing beyond your limits are just a few of the emotions this crag has to offer. Whether you're a seasoned climber or a beginner, Rava Rossa is sure to provide moments of pure vertical passion.
